I was tractor shopping the other day at an orange dealer. I mentioned that I was looking at a JD 750. He said that I do not want to buy a 750 because the 3pt was weak, no lift capacity. He also indicated that the hydraulic pump was small so that all hydraulic cycle times would be slow. Was he blowing smoke up my you know what? The tractor seems real clean for a 20 year old unit (1400 hrs). This would be a starter tractor for me in this size. Will I be dissapointed in it's capacity. I see that the same engine was rated considerably higher in later production. Can I turn up the pump or was there other mods to account for the increase? Am I better off paying 2.5 times as much for a new model of similar capacity and less attachments. Thanks for the help.

What are your anticipated uses for the tractor? The 750 is not going to be a power house at I believe 18 pto hp. but enough to do most small jobs just fine. It is a more basic gearshift type machine. I kinda get the feeling some smoke is being blown. Is this machine 4WD? If you plan to use a FEL, 2WD is a poor choice. For mowing on reasonably even land 2WD will do just fine. ....

I forgot to address the 3 pt. hitch. For a tractor weighing under 2500 lbs.; you will not be lifting a lot of wieght with the hitch. I am not sure of its capacity but I would venture a guess of around 750 lbs. more or less. I am sure someone will jump in who has that info. In any case; I am not aware of any weak hitch issues with these machines. ....

The hitch capacity is listed as 889 pounds with the load centered 24 inches behind the draft arm. That is very comparable with any other tractor in this weight class. It does have a smaller hydraulic pump than newer compact tractors, but is plenty for most applications. Does it have power steering? When power steering is added to these tractors, It does slow things down a bit because it uses about 2 gpm to the steering valve that would ordinarily go to other functions. As far as horsepower, I am amazed at how well these tractors perform with 60" decks. Without hydrostatic pumps robbing power, you need less hp than you might think. It is also carrying around alot less weight than the newer models. overall, it is a very reliable model.

jdgreen,
I didn't ask about power steering. I just assumed that with a FEL it would have PS. Is there a way to upgrade a hydraulic pump to the newer capacities? Do you think that the FEL will lift 750# with a proper counter weight? I have some BB Chevy motors on the shelf that I'd like to move around. In a previous life I had a skid steer to put them up there now way to get them down!! Do you think that the 1400 hours are a concern? With normal care and maintenance I'd normally expect a diesel to go 3000+ hours before an overhaul.
This unit comes w/FEL, 60" snow blower and 60"MMM and both turf and ag bar tires and rear wheel weights. Any ideas what the package is worth? He's asking around $9K for the package. Any info is appreciated. ....

I bought a used mid-80's Ford 1710 about 6 years ago. It fit the budget and would do the initial and on-going work just fine. I also expected to put less than 100 hours per years on it after initial projects. It doesn't have some newer features but it hasn't disappointed me. I'd just keep doing what you're doing but not get too caught up in the stats and capabilities. Owners fit themselves to their tractors and there aren't too many jobs that will stop one cold. They'll all do the work but some take longer than others. In going through the stats you're likely learning about tractors, which is what you want to do.

Tractor parts are expensive and a maintenance budget should be provided for any tractor. I'd add about a thousand to the asking price and call it the DPO budget (Dread Previous Owner--Roger's term from years ago). It's a bit of a crap shoot though. Depending on previous use and maintenance, big typical maintenance points are around 2,500 and 5,000 hours, although some clutches become suspect around 1,500. For your information, you might price a clutch job. The crap shoot is that the previous usage and maintenance seldom is known very well. ....

I don't know of any upgrade for the 750 hydraulics. It has a 9cc displacement pump. The 850 had a 9cc pump also and it had an upgrade available to 11cc. It's possible that this could be altered to fit but I don't know. Like I've always said, if you have enough time and money, you can make anything work. A larger pump wont lift any more weight, it will only do it faster. I'm not sure of the lift capacity on the loader but 750 lbs is probably near the limit, especially if you want to handle that weight up high. 1400 hours should not be a concern if it has had reasonable care. Ive seen these engines go 8000-10000 hours before overhaul with good maintenance. $9000.00 might be a little on the high side ut if tractor and all attachments are in very good to excellent shape it is probably in line. ....
